Latin is a catch-all term referring to music that is from or influenced by the Latin nations: that is Italy, Spain and Portugal, or areas of South and Central America which were colonized by those Europeans, such as Brazil and Mexico. Therefore any Brazilian music, for example Samba, Bossa Novo or Funk Carioca, can also be called Latin, as can the music of Americans of Puerto Rican descent, such as Ray Barretto or Tito Puente.
