Reggae

Overview Edit

Reggae is a traditionally Jamaican music which rose in popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s, mostly thanks to Bob Marley. Reggae has a distinctively slow, off-beat rhythm, which repeats itself in 4/4 time with sometimes little variation. The third beat in the bar is emphasized, and the bass guitar is usually prominent - an even more bass-heavy development of Reggae was Dub.

A 1972 film, The Harder The Come which starred Jimmy Cliff and featured many of his songs, generated considerable interest internationally, and the soundtrack remains a classic. Bands like The Upsetters and The Wailers (later Bob Marley & The Wailers were popular, before Bob Marley made a big impression with a solo career.
