Singer-Songwriter

Also known as:
Singer Songwriter and Singer/Songwriter

Overview Edit

Singer-songwriter refers to the specific case of an individual who writes and performs their own songs, usually on a guitar. It isn’t usually used to refer to, for example, bluesmen or traditional pop balladeers, even if they do write their own songs.

The most esteemed singer-songwriter is probably Bob Dylan. Other acclaimed singer-songwriters include Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Carole King, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and Carrie Underwood.

Other individuals who write and perform their own songs, such as David Bowie, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, or Stevie Wonder, wouldn’t usually be described as singer-songwriters because they tend to be supported by a band or otherwise construct far more complex songs than the traditional one-with-a-guitar template for singer-songwriters.
