Editing — the quick guide

What's new

SoundUnwound keeps on getting better and we're adding new features all the time. Where we mention new features on this page it is indicated by the new! tag.

How do I edit?

The editorial features of SoundUnwound make it possible for anybody with an Amazon account to make changes to the data on the site: just click edit at the top of almost any page to switch to edit mode. You'll then see extra options to correct or add details on SoundUnwound pages - just move your mouse over the field you want to edit. It's easy to get started and 'need help?' links beside some of the fields will help you to make changes. So, if you see a mistake or there's important information missing, feel free to put things right.

The only information other users can see is your username and we don't share any of your details with third parties (for our privacy policy look here). However, explanations for edits given to moderators will be automatically displayed on a page's edit history, whether your edit is accepted or not, so please don't write e-mail addresses or other private information in this space. If you want to change your user name, you can, just click the My settings link which can be found on the top section of any page if you're logged in. new!

You can find information about your edits on the My edits link.

What can I edit?

You can add your knowledge to many parts of a SoundUnwound page. Whether you're adding basic information to the 'Key Facts' section, releases (and their many editions) to the discography, members to bands, or trying your hand at writing an artist profile or explaining a genre, you can update almost every field on a page. If you add the ASIN for a release, we'll return the favor by populating the page with loads of extra data - cover art, track listings, MP3 streaming support, similar releases to try, and album reviews. So why not have a go?

Moderation policy

Edits you make will be shown to others in edit mode. Once your edits are reviewed by us, they'll become official and be seen by everyone, including people who are browsing and aren't in edit mode Any changes you make will be moderated (we work Mon-Fri and should get to your edits within three working days). Moderation should keep inappropriate edits and obvious typos to a minimum.

Pah! My edit was rejected

Every change you make helps to make SoundUnwound a more useful resource for all music lovers. However, sometimes we have to reject your edits. When we reject any of your changes we will give you a reason. Common reasons for rejection are:

  • Contravention of copyright — A lot of the information on the internet is covered by copyright legislation. It means that we can't accept biographies, genre descriptions or photographs which are clearly taken from another source, even if that source is the artist's official website, unless you can prove that you have the authority to use it or that it is freely available.
  • Inappropriate weblinks — Links should be directed towards websites which contain musical information. We will not accept links which appear to be spam, nor will we accept links to illegal download sites.
  • Defamatory / contentious statements — When writing or editing a profile for your favorite artist, please remember that the inclusion of potentially libelous statements will be moderated out and may result in the wholesale rejection of your changes.
  • Information is better suited to another field — SoundUnwound gives you the ideal opportunity to organize information about your favorite artists. Sometimes the information you give is better suited elsewhere on the page and you may find that your change will be rejected and the information re-sited — if it isn't there already.
  • Malicious misuse — We want people to enjoy the SoundUnwound experience, and because of this we will remove editing privileges from any user who persistently attempts to degrade the quality of the site.

Grr! My changes keep getting changed

The SoundUnwound database is a huge collaborative effort and that you should expect your work to be edited by other music lovers, in some cases beyond recognition. You should not upload lengthy self-written profiles if you are not happy to see them altered by others.

If you suspect that the changes are being made maliciously, please notify the moderators using the feedback link.

Your vote counts new!

There are some fields which you cannot edit, but you can influence by voting. Many artists have several pictures, so we've enabled voting so that the most popular images will be displayed first on the artist page. We've added YouTube videos for many artists, but if they're wrong somehow, you can vote to stop them showing. We've assigned genres to artists and releases to get you started, but we know genres cause lots of debates and discussion, so if you don't agree, you can vote for genres you think are more appropriate. You can also add new genres through this tool.

It's all gone wrong! How do I contact you?

If you get stuck and don't know how to do something, check if there's in-line help available — it's in the little 'need help?' links beside several fields. If that doesn't help, have a look at our field-by-field editing guide, which we are still in the process of developing.

If you think you have spotted a bug, please click on the feedback link and let us know. We'll register the bug and work to swat it, or give you advice as quickly as possible, usually within a couple of working days.

I've got a great idea! How do I let you know?

We're aiming to be the world's biggest and best resource for music fans. We have loads of features on the horizon, and we're getting lots of great ideas in from the community. If you have an idea of your own, we'd love to hear it. Just click on the feedback link and let us know. We can't promise that we will implement your suggestion, but we can promise that we're listening and will take account of your feedback in our plans.
