Overview Edit

Vain Glory Opera, released in 1998, is the third album by German power metal band Edguy. It was produced by Stratovarius' Timo Tolkki, who also played additional lead guitar on "Out Of Control", and featured additional lead and backing vocals by Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian on "Out of Control" and the title track "Vain Glory Opera." Further choir vocals were supplied by Ralf Zdiarstek and Norman Meiritz. At the time of recording the album Edguy had not chosen a permanent drummer for the succesion of Dominik Storch, yet. So session musician Frank Lindenthal, a good friend of the band, was asked to play drums on the album.

The Ultravox song Hymn is covered on this album.

Based on the strength of Avantasia (which in itself is pure brilliance), I decided to reach into the roots of Edguy. VGO isn't bad at all, although at times it can seem a little dated to say the least. For example, the title track 'Vain Glory Opera' reminds me of Europe's 'Final Countdown' with those same trumpet keyboard intro's, and it just makes me want to hit the 'skip' button on the CD player. Also, Tobias Sammet's singing style definatley changed later for Avantasia (where the similarity t…
